The Cycle

The items in the first characters mouth represent consumption. Left simplistic, leaving room for interpretation as to what consumption means to you. With so many items being consumed at once, the character’s jaw is broken and the face disfigured. The tear of blood represents, the spikes of cancer rates, obesity, asthma, disease overall, pollution, the displacement of millions of people in order to build dams, wars, extinction. With all that, in pain, the character gives all its got, straining everything to the tip of its tongue, to hold on to every last bit of all that is to be consumed.

The Spanish term 'Comiendo El Cerebro' literally translates to brain eating but, actually means brainwashing. The second character is bitting into the first character’s head. This character represents the store owner, the dealer who feels they are running things but, doesn’t realize its brain is being eaten by the third character. The third character represents the distributor of products to be consumed. The last character can be seen as the one who really has it on lock. Symbolic to the corporate giants, the monopoly owners, the financial institutions that trade and drain resources, who start wars, destroy culture and 'inconvenient knowledge', the ones who create mass hysteria, conduct social experiments, claim ownership and commodify all forms of life.

The Teeth

From the first charcter to the last, the teeth progressivly become more jagged. The last characters  teeth are shaped like muscular human arms to represent a more dynamic psychological grip. Symbolizing the remarkably extensive research and manipulation of the masses, that usually goes unnoticed by the people it targets.

The Masks

All but the first character are wearing masks. The masks look like demons, the conventional symbol of evil. The second demon, more aggressive then the other two represents the “to right to be wrong”. Some of the educated, the professionals, the influentials, the elders, religious leaders, the ones who feel they have a true understanding of whats going on, with little tolerance for anything that questions what is established, not realizing the last demon is eating from all of the characters in this picture. This devil looks more calm then the rest, with true understanding. Influenced the past and working on forcibly molding the future, all in the name of…

The masks represent deception. Selling you expired food, industry byproducts, understudied devices made to fall apart, faulty software applications, the 'War On Drugs', the invention of ADHD, the so called advancements in medicine and technology conveniently loaded with side affects, the selling of dreams to the youth to die at war or go mostly unattended when they need help in the very country they fought for, the public relation donations, the deceptive cartoon icons, the eco-deadly greenwashing movement, the faith based past and present justification of atrocities, the elitist non profits, the superficial tycoon philanthropy.

Empower the few, distract, enslave and slowly destroy the many.

'Desde El Comienzo, Hasta La Muerte , Comiéndote El Cerebro'

These were the lyrics that inspired the work

"Culture Pirates lyrics (work in progress)

on a rocking rowdy ship
we set sail with a crooked mast
in the telescope is the future
to provoke as we bask
in the blood of our past

with no roots and no culture
the downward spiral
of a blue-eyed vulture...

we're culture pirates and we're pillaging
appropriating what once was true
we're culture pirates
remix and rummage through
we're culture pirates
and we're coming for you"

I was considering making an illustration of a demon eating random items from material objects to, religious symbols to, food and so forth. In other words "consuming culture".

Then I thought, maybe a demon, eating a demon, eating a person. Something kinda rhythmic.

After working the initial concept, I felt ready to combine both idea and start working the outline.
